Functions of the Shade Tree Commission:

The Shade Tree Commission encourages and oversees arborculture, with responsibility for the regulation, planting and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery on any municipal property, public highway, park or parkway in the Borough, including their planting, trimming, care and protection.   The Commission has the authority to move or require the removal of any tree or part of a tree that is dangerous to public safety, and is also available to advise residents on planting and care of shade trees.

The Shade Tree Commission serves as advisor to Borough construction projects where trees and adjunct landscaping is affected, such as road and sidewalk maintenance and new building.

While it is a priority to save trees whenever possible, the Commission oversees the maintenance of healthy trees, but always with a concern for public safety.  Trees that obstruct public properties or that present unsafe conditions for people or property are either pruned or removed.  The Commission maintains a policy of replacing at least one tree for every one removed, and encourages residents and commercial builders to do the same.  Often an unsafe or unhealthy tree will be removed and replaced with a more suitable variety for the location and growing conditions to ensure the safety of the public and longevity of the tree.
